A Sad State of Affairs;

For those of you who have spent the first three months of 2011 living under a rock, here's what you've missed:
Floods in Australia, riots in Syria, revolutions in Egypt, civil war in Libya, tornadoes in the US, bombings in Ireland, droughts in Africa, earthquakes in New Zealand, tsunamis and nuclear catastrophe in Japan, and of course Rebecca Black releasing Friday.
Phew. And we're only in April!
Doesn't it make you think that that things are getting more crazy in the world?

We're more connected now than ever, too. It almost seems that you can't escape the constant flow of tragic happenings.
Every time I see a new news headline, Flickr image, YouTube video or a blog post by one of you guys of people suffering and the world falling down around them, my heart aches.

When that happens, it's time to sign out of Blogger, log out of Facebook, turn off the TV, pause the iPod, ditch the mobile phone and appreciate the real things that are okay, like the people you love and the things in life that bring you joy.

I'm pretty sure that when the proverbial fan is hit, these are the things that we will all be wishing we had spent more time appreciating. Like I said in that post a couple of months back, ask yourself if you're really appreciating all that you have. Sure, we're the lucky ones living in democratic societies, but that's not going to protect us from natural disasters and the like.
The saying goes, "live life like you're going to die tomorrow", and maybe there's more than just a little truth in that. After all, "you only live once".

So, chin up. Value what you have. Hug your friends. Love your family. And be good to each other.

A lone Japanese girl mourns beside the ruins of her home.
You never know when this could be you.

  4. this is perfect. thanks a lot man. the world is getting a little too concerned about what we HAVE instead of what needs to happen. take the budget agreement for example. people need to work together to survive.

  7. Thats what I think!
You should start appreciating life as such, and everything around you. Thats what its all about.

  8. I agree. When you watch shows like Star Trek the Next Generation, you see a society where everyone works together, and becoming a billionaire is not the end-game. Everyone's somewhat happy and mankind is a space faring species. Great post!

  9. Behind the backdrop, things are actually getting better in some ways

  10. Yeah, loads of disasters and unrest so far this year. It's a bit crazy how much there has been, and how much time has been devoted to it in the news. It's almost as if Americans are interested in what's going on around the world...for once.

  11. You forgot to add Rebecca Black's song "Friday" to the list of disasters.

  13. things like these have always happened, its just that its reported more widely nowadays

  14. @Trelin. OH, of course! I'll edit it in.
@Ed. I have to disagree with you there. Sure, things like these have always happened, but not on this magnitude. The earthquake & tsunami in Japan have been the worst they've seen in hundreds of years, the nuclear disaster has been the worst since Chernobyl and the revolutions in the Middle East are the biggest since... forever.

  18. Things are not so bad, you see on the news all the tragic in the world because that sells newspapers, the world has been always a crazy place, not just now.

  20. " Rebecca Black releasing Friday." i shat myself laughing... but true, this was probably the worse thing ever, and it could have been avoided.

  21. yes, but at the same time the amount of people surviving per disaster in modern day is a lot better than it used to be, so it evens out.

  27. I really do wonder if all this connectivity isn't making us more depressed. Humans evolved to be close-knit and a bit isolated but adventurous to a degree. Now we've spread so far and are so involved with what's going on all over the world there's a distinct lack of emotional resources to go around.
